CIRCULAR NO. 126

Date: 11.04.18

DEAR PARENTS,

Kindly note the points given below and cooperate with us.

  1. Keeping in view the deficiency of vitamin D in children and an urgency to supplement it, the morning assemblies have been decided to be held in the school ground at usual time i.e 08:00 a.m.

  2. You are therefore requested to ensure that your wards have breakfast before coming to school.

We are enclosing some facts regarding Vitamin D with the circular.

Facts & Myths about Vitamin D

  • FACT: VITAMIN D PRODUCTION FROM THE SUN IS BEST AT MIDDAY. You should try and get sun exposure between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM as this is the best time of day to make vitamin D from the sun. Remember, if your shadow is shorter than you are tall, you are making vitamin D from the sun.

  • MYTH: GETTING A LOT OF SUN EXPOSURE ONLY ON THE WEEKENDS IS GOOD SUN EXPOSURE BEHAVIOR. It is important to get consistent, sensible sun exposure each day. Try to get 15-30 minutes of midday sun exposure each day, instead of ‘catching up’ on the weekend with hours of unprotected exposure.

  • MYTH: VITAMIN D IS ONLY IMPORTANT FOR BONE HEALTH. Vitamin D is important for your bones, but researchers are discovering that vitamin D may play a role in almost every area of health.

  • MYTH: YOU CAN PRODUCE VITAMIN D THROUGH SUNLIGHT THAT PASSES THROUGH A WINDOW. Things like glass windows, air pollution, and clouds can block the rays from the sun that help make vitamin D in your skin.

Sources of Vitamin D

  • Liver, beef, veal, egg yolk , dairy products , some saltwater fish (salmon, tuna and sardine).

  • Fortified food (milk, yogurt, cheese, margarine, orange juice, breads and cereals).

  • It is stable in cooking and storage.

  • Synthesis in skin.

Vitamin D deficiency: Rickets and Osteomalacia

  • Osteomalacia is the adult equivalent of rickets. It results from the demineralization of bone, rather than the failure to mineralize it in the first place, as is the case with rickets.

  • Women who have little exposure to sunlight are especially at risk from osteomalacia after several pregnancies, because of the strain that pregnancy places on their marginal reserve of calcium.

  • Osteomalacia also occurs in the older people. The problem may be inadequate exposure to sunlight, but there is also evidence that the capacity to form 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin decreases with advancing age, so that older people are more reliant on the few dietary sources of vitamin D.
